The well-being of UNOPS personnel is crucial to the organization. UNOPS promotes the UN Mental Health and Well-being Strategy for 2024 and Beyond by offering capacity building and mental health literacy events, short-term crisis counseling, and several stress-management options to support colleagues' well-being.
At UNOPS, we recognize that our work can be demanding, with project pressures, challenging duty stations, and time spent away from home. This is why we are committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels respected, valued, and supported. We all have a role to play in fostering a culture of respect, openness, and support. This includes: openly discussing mental health; breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health; and creating spaces for colleagues to feel comfortable talking about their well-being and utilizing available resources, such as stress management resources and counseling support services offered by UNOPS.
To support the mental health and well-being of its personnel, UNOPS makes psychosocial support available to all personnel via our external psychosocial counseling service provider for crisis counseling and the regional Critical Incident Stress Management Section (CISMS) Counselors from the UN Secretariat, whenever present on the ground. Workplace accommodation guidelines are in place to support personnel with mental health conditions, so they can continue working and can thrive at work.
To strengthen awareness, skills and opportunities for recognizing and acting early on mental health issues and to protect and promote the mental health of all personnel, self-paced stress management resources can be consulted via the intranet page Personnel Well-being, the Learning Zone Stay Healthy page and a dedicated website for crisis response in hardship duty stations. Free well-being programs lasting several months are offered twice a year via our partner Peace on Purpose. Manager training for mental health and mental health literacy events for all personnel are held at UNOPS on a regular basis.
